Module Aims

1. Develop comprehensive knowledge of pulp inflammation mechanisms, including how pulpal inflammation develops and progresses to apical periodontitis.
2. Recognise the critical role of patient history, clinical and radiographic assessments, and diagnostic testing in establishing precise diagnoses.
3. Build a structured approach to diagnosis through real-world clinical cases that incorporate relevant imaging and diagnostic test results. Particular emphasis will be placed on evaluating both 2D and, when applicable, 3D radiographic images.
4. Explore the complexities of multifactorial pain presentations, with specific focus on non-odontogenic pain origins, supported by clinical examples.

Module Aims

1. Develop comprehensive knowledge and proficiency in access cavity design principles for all tooth types, including upper and lower incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.
2. Understand the essential role of rubber dam isolation and master systematic techniques for its effective placement.
3. Recognise that optimal access cavity preparation relies on thorough knowledge of root canal anatomy combined with detailed analysis of pre-treatment radiographs.
4. Gain familiarity with the variety and applications of burs and piezo-electric ultrasonic instruments used to achieve ideal access cavity preparation.
5. Learn how enhanced visualisation through magnification and improved lighting enables conservative tooth preparation while ensuring complete canal location.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explain the rationale for rubber dam use and demonstrate proper techniques for its application in endodontic procedures.
2. Integrate root canal anatomy knowledge with pre-operative radiographic interpretation to plan optimal access cavity designs across all tooth types.

1. To acquire and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key principles of canal negotiation, glide path formation, canal preparation and consider adjuncts thereafter in order to adequately decontaminate the root canal system.
2. Appreciate how canal negotiation facilitates glide path formation which subsequently allows safe root canal preparation
3. Consider a variety of methods to achieve the same objectives
4. Reflect on supplemental techniques to adequately decontaminate the the root canal system once the main canals are prepared

2. Module Aims

   1. To acquire and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key principles of root canal obturation in order to entomb existing microbes and reduce recontamination of new microbes.
   2. Consider when a chemomechanically debrided root canal system is ready to obturate.
   3. Appreciate the importance of apical gauging for all obturation techniques.
   4. Reflect on the value of a well-fitting master cone in most obturation techniques.
   5. Compare and contrast different obturation methods in order to achieve the objectives

   1. Consider when a root canal is ready to obturate
   2. Demonstrate an understanding of the canal length, shape and size in order to select an appropriate obturation method and master cone if required
   3. Demonstrate an understanding five obturation methods

   2. Consider when and how to restore a root filled tooth
   3. Appreciate the importance of remaining dentine and occlusion on selecting appropriate restorative materials.
   4. Reflect on the role of a post to retain a core
   5. Compare and contrast different fabricated and pre-fabricated metal and non-metal posts

2. Module aims

   1. To acquire and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key principles of dento-alveolar trauma
   2. Consider the prevalence, common types and common causes of luxation injuries
   3. Consider the tissues affected, how they heal and how injury to the worst-affected tissues affects the management and prognosis of teeth
   4. Reflect on key aspects of history and examination of patients who gave sustained dento-alveolar trauma in order to specify the worst-affected tissues
   5. Consider an evidence-based approach to managing dento-alveolar trauma cases including immediate management and follow-up protocols
   6. Appreciate the prognosis of affected teeth and consider positive and negative predictors

   Learning outcomes

   1. Demonstrate an understanding of the prevalence of dento-alveolar trauma
   2. Demonstrate an understanding of the types of luxation injuries
   3. Demonstrate an understanding of the common causes of luxation injuries
   4. Demonstrate an understanding of which tissues may be affected, how the injured tissues heal and how this impacts on management including splinting times
   5. Demonstrate an understanding history and examination of the injured patient
   6. Conclude the immediate management of luxation injuries

   Module aims – Coronal disassembly 

   1. To acquire and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key principles of coronal disassembly
   2. Consider why, when and how a direct and indirect, intra-coronal and extra-coronal restoration can be removed
   3. Reflect on various methods of coronal restoration removal
   4. Appreciate the importance of assessment root integrity and restorability prior once the existing coronal restoration is removed

   2. Consider why, when and how orthograde root canal retreatment should be considered
   3. Appreciate the importance of having a sound restoration to work through when carrying out endodontic treatment
   4. Reflect on various methods of identifying the nature of the contents of the previously treated root canal system

   1. Formulate a strategy for deciding when orthograde root canal retreatment is indicated
   2. Appraise the pre-operative status of the tooth
   3. Develop a process for management of the root canal system once previous canal contents have been removed

   1. To acquire and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key principles of procedural (iatrogenic) errors and troubleshoot common problems encountered in endodontics.
   2. Consider why, when and how procedural errors occur and the philosophy of managing them
   3. Appreciate the most common procedural errors in endodontics, how they can be identified, prevented and subsequently managed.
   4. Consider iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic problems encountered during root canal treatment such as difficulties with anaesthesia, internal resorption, ledges, blockages, perforations and open apices.
   5. Evaluate methods that may be employed to overcome common endodontic problems
